Do it Yourself Furnace Maintenance

    • 1). Install a carbon monoxide detector in the same room as the furnace. A carbon monoxide detector will emit a beeping noise if carbon monoxide is being released from your furnace. Check the carbon monoxide detector monthly to ensure it is working. Many carbon monoxide detectors have a test button that allows you to test the batteries.

    • 2). Open the fire door on your gas-fired furnace while the furnace is on to check the flames. The furnace's flames should be blue, which indicates it is working properly. A yellow-tipped or streaky yellow flame indicates the furnace requires an adjustment to balance the mix of air and gas.

    • 3). Replace the filter on your electric furnace every three to four months, as dust and other microbes quickly collect on the filter and can block air from passing through, putting strain on the blower motor and reducing the furnace's efficiency.

    • 4). Keep the area around your furnace uncluttered, as furnaces need space to ventilate.

    • 5). Flip the electric furnace's power switch to turn it off if you need to make adjustments.
