The Phase Out of 1,1,1 Trichloroethane

1
1,1,1 trichloroethane is currently being phased out of use due to its negative impacts on our environment.
Because of this, products such as organic solvents and organic degreasers are now being used in place of cleaning goods containing 1,1,1 trichloroethane.
Organic cleaning goods are better than their traditional counterparts because they do not break down the Earth's naturally occurring protective ozone layer, preventing our planet from overheating and exposing us to excessive amounts of harmful UV rays from the sun.
By using organic solvents, rivers, lakes, and oceans are being protected from the dangers of over pollution.
The air we breathe is less smoggy and less likely to cause lung and eye irritation.
One industry especially effected by the phasing out of 1,1,1 trichloroethane after Montreal protocols banned its use is the aerospace field.
The aerospace industry is now using eco friendly products such as organic degreasers in order to comply with these new restrictions.
Solvents and degreasers are used in the aerospace field every day, and products containing 1,1,1 trichloroethane were usually made to be sprayed on parts in order to degrease them.
The viscosity of 1,1,1 trichloroethane allowed it to be applied directly onto parts needing to be washed, meaning that less time would be needed to manually clean each dirty part.
The flash point of 1,1,1 trichloroethane has made it particularly useful in order to prevent fires in manufacturing plants and workshops.
The biggest advantage of 1,1,1 trichloroethane, however, was that it was able to be utilized in multiple different ways, whereas organic solvents and organic degreasers often can only be used for one purpose during the manufacturing process.
The organic degreaser currently being used in place of the original product 1,1,1 trichloroethane is called VG-151.
This new environmentally friendly product can be sprayed onto any surface and immediately afterward it will turn into a gel.
The advantage of this characteristic of VG-151 is that it prevents employees from having to constantly respray more degreaser onto the surface of what they're cleaning.
An organic solvent now being used in electrical applications is the dialectric solvent called Positron.
Although Positron has many advantages over 1,1,1 trichloroethane in regard to pollution levels and employee safety, 1,1,1 trichloroethane was easier for employees to utilize in some situations than the new product.
Though the aerospace industry has been forced to make drastic changes to their cleaning methods, the transition to the use of non toxic and environmentally friendly organic cleaning products is a necessary effort.
Once employees have been trained how to correctly utilize these new eco friendly solvents and degreasers, both the safety of our environment and the employees themselves can be guaranteed.
1,1,1 trichloroethane has proved itself to be very useful over the years of its vast popularity, but the negative effects it has on human health and the Earth is not worth the risk of using it any longer.
