A car's transmission is one of the most important and most complex pieces of equipment in the vehicle. Its job is to send power from the engine to the drive wheels, while also making sure the engine runs at the proper revolutions per minute, or rpm. Depending on the size and type of the transmission, it may be designed for passenger cars, or like the 4R100, capable of powering heavy-duty trucks. - The 4R100 transmission was made by Ford Motor Company for use in its F-Series and Super Duty trucks. It was first seen in the 1999 model year, following on the heels of the E40D model. These two transmissions are similar, but the 4R100 was redesigned slightly. It was taken out of production after the 2003 model year.
- The 4R100 is a four-speed automatic transmission with rear-wheel drive. Unlike a manual transmission, the driver does not have to select the appropriate gear. This transmission switches gears on its own. Rear-wheel drive transmissions are typically at the back of the engine, and they send power to the vehicle's back wheels.
- During its production run, the 4R100 transmission was mounted onto the 5.4-liter, V-8 engines found in Ford's F-150, F-250, F-350 and F-450 models. Ford's 250, 350 and 550 Super Duty trucks usually were paired with the 7.3-liter Power Stroke diesel engine, a 6.8-liter, 10-cylinder engine. When this diesel engine was removed from production, the 4R100 went along with it.
