How to Replace the Damper in the Steering of a 1997 Jeep
- 1). Remove the bolt from the axle housing end of the steering damper with the appropriate-sized socket and ratchet. If necessary, hold the nut with a combination wrench while turning the bolt.
- 2). Unscrew the bolt from the end of the steering damper with the socket and ratchet. If necessary, hold the nut with the combination wrench while turning the bolt.
- 3). Remove the old steering damper from the vehicle.
- 1). Position the new steering damper in place on the axle housing, then reinstall the bolt and nut, tightening them securely.
- 2). Push or pull on the steering linkage end of the steering damper to alter its length to match the location of the mounting hole in the steering center link. Install the bolt and nut and tighten both securely.
- 3). Start the vehicle and turn the steering through the entire range, from left to right several times. Turn the engine off and recheck the steering damper mounting bolts for tightness, retightening them as necessary.
