How to Wire a Single Speaker in a Stereo
- 1). Place your speaker. When locating your speaker, it's best to position it facing directly at the listener, at ear level, if at all possible.
- 2). Lay out speaker wire from the speaker location to the amplifier or receiver, routing the wire so that it won't interfere with the movement of people through the room. Running the wire along the baseboard, at the perimeter of the room, is a good option.
- 3). Cut the wire to length with your wire cutters. Pull apart the two leads of the speaker wire on both ends with your fingers. Remove 1/2 to 5/8 inch of insulation from the ends of each of the leads on both ends of the speaker wire using wire strippers.
- 4). Identify the speaker output terminals on the rear of your amplifier or receiver. There will be two pairs, one pair marked "Speaker -- R" and the other "Speaker -- L." Choose one of the sets of terminals -- it doesn't matter which.
- 5). Unscrew the red terminal on the pair of terminals you've chosen with your fingers, until a hole appears in the terminal post. Slide the bare end of the positive speaker wire lead into the hole and screw the terminal down to hold the wire. Repeat with the other lead and the black terminal.
- 6). Unscrew the red terminal on the speaker with your fingers until a hole appears in the terminal post. Slide the bare end of the positive speaker wire lead into the hole and screw the terminal down to hold the wire. Repeat with the other lead and the black terminal.
- 7). Set the balance control on your stereo to the side you've attached the speaker wires to by twisting the "balance" knob. For example, if you connected the speaker to the "R" terminals, set the balance to the right -- this will send the full output of the stereo to the single speaker.
