How to Decorate Bridges for the Yard
- 1). Paint the bridge a bright color such as red or green. Although most people think of bridges as natural wood or stone colored, adding some bright paint is a way to make the bridge stand out from the surrounding landscape. If you don't want to paint the entire bridge, consider painting the handrails a bright color.
- 2). For wooden bridges, add decorative wooden newel posts to the top of the bridge posts. Newel posts are the decorative parts at the top and bottom of stair banisters. These posts come in a variety of designs and are easily installed by drilling a hole in the center of the top of a bridge post and attaching the newel post using a long headless screw. Insert the screw into the newel post first and then screw the newel post into the hole of the bridge post until secure.
- 3). Hang clear string lights on the bridge to create instant year-round ambiance. Although you can use small clear Christmas tree lights, choosing lights with a slightly larger bulb results in a more attractive look for year-round decorating. The most attractive way to string lights is to place them on the outside of the bridge handrail. For straight bridges, hang the lights in a straight line directly under the handrail on the outside of the bridge. If the bridge is arched, use the same technique following the outside of the handrail to created an arched effect.
- 4). Hang window-box planters on the handrails of the bridge and plant beautiful flowers in them. If the bridge is made of wood, attach the window-box planter using screws. If the bridge is made of stone or other material, look for flower hangers made for decks. These are similar to window boxes but they are adjustable and simply hang over railings.
