Connecting your Cable Box to your Sony Home Theater System

• 1). Determine which connections your cable box and Sony system use for audio. There are two standard cable types for connecting digital audio. The first is an optical or Toslink cable, which has a squared port. The other is a digital coax, which has a rounded RCA-style port. It is likely that your equipment will have both types. There are no advantages or disadvantages to either. Just be sure the one you choose is available on both the cable box and surround sound system.
  
  
• 2). Connect your chosen cable style to the port labeled "Out" on the back of your cable box. If you've chosen the digital coax style cable, its port will be orange or black. If you've chosen a Toslink cable, the port will be squared with a small plastic flap covering it.
  
  
• 3). Connect the other end of your chosen cable to an "In" port on the back of your Sony surround sound system. Take note of how your chosen "In" port is labeled. Depending on which Sony model you have, it could be labeled as "SAT", "TV" or "Video 1." Any of these ports will work, but be sure to remember which one you've chosen.
  
  
• 4). Using either your remote or the manual buttons on the front of your Sony surround sound system receiver, select the input matching the "In" port you chose on the back. This tells the receiver which of its ports to decode and play. Be certain that your cable box and TV are on.
