How to Care for Bahiagrass
- 1). Loosen the soil prior to planting with a rake or lawn aerator.
- 2). Sprinkle a few seeds by hand on your lawn if you already have an existing bahiagrass lawn and just need to fill in some bare spots. Place sod down or use a broadcast grass seed spreader to cover your whole lawn if starting from scratch. Don't overseed your lawn, as too many seeds in one area can create weak seedlings that will likely die because they cannot get the resources they need to develop into strong grass plants.
- 3). Fertilize only when necessary due to the abundance of sun in the climates that bahiagrass tends to grow in, which can result in your lawn burning. Use a fertilizer that is high in iron and calcium to keep your lawn at a stable pH level.
- 4). Water often, as the sandy acidic soils that bahiagrass thrives in absorbs much of the water intended for the bahiagrass. Do your watering in the early morning when the sun is just coming up or just after sunset to ensure that your lawn is getting enough water.
- 5). Mow your bahiagrass lawn at a length of between 2 and 4 inches to avoid having the grass grow long enough for the scraggly V-shaped seedheads to form. Use the clippings from mowing as mulch for your lawn, if possible, to keep it healthy.
