Agricultural products that are farmed and processed organically use natural fertilizers, organic feed and non-chemical herbicides, among other measures, to create food that is considered organic. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) certifies food that is at least 95 percent organically produced with non-chemical methods as an organic food item. For women who are pregnant, organic food may be an appealing option to reduce their exposure to chemicals and other unnatural agents. There are several healthy organic food choices for pregnant women. - Organic meat is typically free of any steroids, hormones or antibiotics, according to the website Better Health Channel, which is operated by the Australian government. This can be important to pregnant women who do not wish to ingest anything unnatural that may be passed along to the baby. Note that meat labeled "free range" or "natural" is not the same thing as organic. Look for the USDA Organic Seal to ensure that the meat is organic and free of any chemicals, hormones or antibiotics.
- Fruit that has skin that is thin or difficult to clean may contain pesticide even after washing. As such, pregnant women may wish to consider going organic when purchasing these items to avoid consuming even low levels of pesticide. The organization Environmental Working Group suggests purchasing organic peaches, apples, blueberries and strawberries when buying fruit. In addition, vegetables with absorbent or thin skin may also contain chemicals or pesticide even after cleaning. This includes celery, kale, sweet bell peppers, spinach and potatoes, among others.
- Cows fed hormones or antibiotics may pass these chemicals through to the milk that they produce. Twelve different pesticides have been identified in non-organic milk, according to the website The Daily Green. This makes milk a good organic choice for pregnant women.
