How to Change the Drive Belt on a Pontiac Sunfire
- 1). Release the tension on the belt by rotating the spring-loaded tensioner with the serpentine belt removal tool. The tensioner pulley on the Pontiac Sunfire is located below the alternator on the left side of the engine as viewed from the passenger side of the engine compartment. Install a 13 mm socket adapter (for 2.4 liter engines) or a 15 mm socket adapter (for 2.2 liter engines) onto the serpentine belt removal tool. Slip the tool onto the bolt in the center of the tensioner pulley and rotate the pulley down to release the belt. Slip the belt off the alternator pulley and release the tensioner.
- 2). Remove the old belt from the remaining pulleys and pull it from the engine compartment. Route the new belt around the pulleys according to the belt routing guide located under the hood or in your service manual. Leave the alternator pulley for last. Using the serpentine belt removal tool, rotate the tensioner and slip the belt onto the alternator pulley.
- 3). Check the belt for proper alignment on the pulleys. The belt should sit flat on the pulleys with no edges overhanging the pulleys. If adjustments to the position need to be made, release the tension on the belt again and move the belt as needed.
