3 Reasons to Work on Your Abs
It is taken as a given these days that having "washboard abs" is something very desirable, even though relatively few people, it seems, actually manage to achieve it.
But occasionally I do hear someone ask, "What's the big deal about abs, anyway? Why should I want them?" Of course, we all have abdominal muscles, which is what we mean when we talk about abs.
But, they are mostly invisible, hidden under layers of fat, unless we diet and exercise to bring them into view.
So, everybody has abs.
Now the question is, why would we want to work on them? Why should we spend the effort to attain a so-called "six pack" down there between our ribs and our pelvis? Here are three good reasons: 1.
To look good.
This may seem obvious, but then, why not worry just as much about trying to develop muscular arms and legs? Nothing wrong with muscled limbs, of course.
However, with the right combination of diet and exercise, achieving a taut abdomen is actually easier and faster than building a bulging bicep.
To look good fast, aim your efforts at the abs! 2.
To be healthy and strong.
The abdominals sit at the core of our bodies.
They help provide critical support to our torso and especially to our internal organs.
Well-defined abs just seem to shout vitality and strength.
3.
To provide motivation.
Because, when worked on correctly, the abdominal muscles are relatively easy to develop (despite what you have been told), seeing them in all their glory in your mirror will pump up your self-image and spur on your efforts to improve the rest of your body.
Those three reasons make up my answer to the question, "Why abs?" Some people accept them, but then go on to say that achieving desirable flat abs is too much work, and perhaps even impossible in some individuals.
I totally disagree! I will not kid you and say you can get eye-popping abs in a month, or with half-hearted effort.
What I will say is that if you change your diet to get rid of excess carbs and sugar, and do the proper exercises (which are not necessarily the ones you might first think of), you can astound yourself and impress others with a set of tight, chiseled abdominals.
