How to Hike With Heartburn
- 1). When hiking, wear loose-fitting clothes around your waistline. A tight belt or even the waist strap on your backpack can constrict the stomach, forcing acid up into the esophagus.
- 2). Avoid eating fatty or high-acid foods before your hike. Foods such as bacon, hamburgers, and pizza can trigger heartburn.
- 3). If possible, carry a small bottle of club soda while hiking. A few sips helps to neutralize stomach acid.
- 4). For quick, temporary relief from heartburn, chewable antacids are available in many forms. Choose an antacid that contains both aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide.
- 5). For longer relief, you might choose one of several over-the-counter remedies that contain either cimetidine or famotidine. These tend to reduce the amount of acid the stomach produces.
