How to Test Your Touch Typing Speed
- 1). Set your timer for three minutes. This will give you time to get into the flow of typing.
- 2). Place your book or other piece of written material next to you in a place where you can easily read it while typing.
- 3). Start the timer and immediately begin typing from the book or other piece of writing. Stop as soon as the timer stops, even if you are mid-word.
- 4). Count the total number of characters you typed, including spaces. For example, let's say you typed 960 characters in the three minutes.
- 5). Divide the number of characters you typed by five to determine the total number of words you typed. In terms of typing tests and speed, a "word" is defined by five characters regardless of how long the words you actually typed were. In our example, we would divide 960 by five for a total of 192 words.
- 6). Subtract one word from your total for each mistake you made while typing. Mistakes include missed spaces, incorrect letters, reversed letters and any other typos. In our example, let's say you made 12 mistakes in your three minutes of typing. We would subtract 12 from 192 for a total count of 180 words.
- 7). Divide the final number of words by three (for the three minutes you typed). In our example, we would divide 180 by three for a final number of 60 words per minute.
