    • 1). Vacuum the carpet thoroughly using a vacuum cleaner.

    • 2). Ensure the SteamVac is not plugged in to an electrical outlet.

    • 3). Remove the clean water tank with attached detergent container. This is the upper tank, located on the upright section of the SteamVac, above the recovery tank. Depress the tank handle and pull toward you to remove the tank.

    • 4). Remove the cap from the tank by twisting counter-clockwise. Make sure you are removing the cap to the tank and not the one on the attached detergent container, which is on the right when looking at the tank from the front.

    • 5). Fill the tank with one gallon of hot tap water. Make sure the water is no warmer than 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Replace the cap and twist clockwise until tight.

    • 6). Remove the cap to the detergent container by twisting counter-clockwise.

    • 7). Fill the detergent container with 16 ounces of carpet detergent. The manufacturer recommends using only Hoover detergent. Replace the detergent container cap and twist clockwise until tight.

    • 8). Replace the clean water tank and detergent container by positioning the bottom of the tank in place on the SteamVac and pivoting the tank up and away from you until it snaps into place.

    • 9). Slide the brush-setting indicator to turn the agitator brushes on or off, depending on your preference. The brush setting indicator is located on the right side of the SteamVac base, near the top.

      Plug the power cord into an electrical outlet.

      Slide up the wash/rinse switch, on the front of the handle, to put the SteamVac in wash mode.

      Slide down the power switch, on the front of the handle, to turn on the power.

      Depress the handle release pedal, in the middle of the back of the base, and swing the handle down to the operating position.

      Depress the solution trigger, on the back of the handle, to release detergent. While keeping the trigger depressed, slowly push the SteamVac forward and then draw it back to you. This is a wet stroke.

      Release the solution trigger, slowly push the SteamVac forward and then draw it back to you. This is a dry stroke.

      Continue using dry strokes over the same path until very little water is entering the recovery tank. The recovery tank is located on top of the SteamVac base and is revealed when the handle is lowered.

      Move to the side, overlapping your cleaning paths by about an inch, and repeat steps 14 through 16. Continue until the whole area has been cleaned.

      If desired, slide the wash/rinse switch down, and repeat steps 14 through 17 to rinse with clean water.
