Watering

• Mulches cause water to permeate the surface more slowly than if the soil was bare, so watering the ground before applying mulch is a good idea, especially during warm weather or if the plants are young. Water the soil gently for 30 to 45 minutes so plants have adequate moisture. Watering before applying mulch may also prevent lightweight mulch from blowing around.
  
  

Preparation

• Watering beforehand also aids soil preparation. Pull any weeds from the garden area after watering the soil. The weeds will come up easily when the soil is moist. Although mulches can prevent weeds from germinating, they generally do not stop weeds that are already growing.
  
  

Mulch Application

• After watering the soil well, apply 3 to 4 inches of mulch throughout the planting area. Keep the mulch 2 to 3 inches away from plants. Mulch placed too closely to plants can smother them or reduce the flow of water and oxygen. Water the mulch after application to prevent the formation of a fungus that causes the mulch to mat together. Apply mulch soon after planting so weeds don't germinate.
  
  

Considerations

• Consider laying soaker hoses underneath the mulch, especially if you live in a hot, dry climate. The soaker hoses deliver water directly to the plants, reducing the need to water the soil before applying the mulch. Shredded leaves and grass clippings have a tendency to clump, repelling water. Dry these materials before application to reduce matting, and apply 1/2 inch of mulch at a time.
