How to Remove Paint Striping

    Adhesive Auto Paint Striping

    • 1). Heat the body of the car where the stripes spread across. Park the car in direct sunlight on a hot day and use a blow dryer to heat up the stripes slowly.

    • 2). Start at one end of the stripe and peel it up from the car body with a plastic putty knife. Do not use a metal knife, as this could chip the paint underneath the stripes.

    • 3). Pull the stripe away from the car slowly. Inch down the body of the car, pulling the stripe up as slowly as possible.

    • 4). Dampen a scrubbing pad with a multipurpose cleaner and lubricant. A popular brand is WD-40.

    • 5). Rub the dampened scrubbing pad under the stripe as you pull it off. This will remove leftover adhesive from the underside of the stripe.

    Painted Auto Paint Striping

    • 1). Wet a strip of 800-grit sandpaper. Apply it to a sanding block. Sand the paint stripe until gone.

    • 2). Wet a strip of 1200-grit sandpaper. Apply it to a sanding block. Sand the area where you removed the paint stripe. The sandpaper should be wet at all times.

    • 3). Rub buffing compound onto a buffing cloth. Buff the area where the pinstripe once was. Rub the cloth in firm, tight circles over the area.

    • 4). Rub car polish onto a polishing cloth. Polish the area where the stripe was. Rub the cloth in firm, tight circles as you did when buffing.

    • 5). Remove the polish with a clean polishing cloth. Rub in firm, tight circles until the polish is absorbed into the cloth, leaving the car shiny and smooth.

    Wall Paint Striping

    • 1). Put cardboard down over the entire floorspace where you will remove the paint striping. After the chemical remover is applied, the paint will come off in chunks.

    • 2). Put on thick rubber gloves and a face mask. Open the windows and doors in the room for proper ventilation.

    • 3). Paint your semi-past chemical stripper onto the first paint stripe. Allow it to sit for 30 minutes.

    • 4). Chip the paint off with your scraper.

    • 5). Move on to the next stripe and repeat steps three and four. Apply the stripper in manageable pieces that you can chip away quickly before the stripper dries.

    • 6). Go over the area with mineral spirits and old, lint-free rags once the paint is gone.

    • 7). Finish by rubbing the area firmly with a medium-grade steel-wool pad.
