How to Make Your Own Homemade Hanging Light
- 1). Measure across the base of a 12-inch diameter plastic planter to find the center point. Drill a 1-inch diameter hole through the center of the base of the planter.
- 2). Measure the space between the light bulbs on a string light strand. Mark dots on the outside of the planter that are spaced the same as the string lights. Randomly place the dots or create a pattern.
- 3). Drill 1/4-inch holes through each dot. Starting inside the planter, feed the plug end of the string light cord through the 1-inch hole. Pull the cord through the base of the planter until the light bulbs are inside the planter.
- 4). Insert the bulbs on the string light strand through the holes from inside the planter. Tape the string light wire in place with electrical tape.
- 5). Cut a section of outdoor fabric to fit inside the planter. The color of the fabric should coordinate with the planter. Spray adhesive to the backside of the fabric. Press the fabric in place on top of the string light wire. Omit this step if the underside of your homemade light will not be readily visible.
- 6). Paint the power cord exiting the base of the planter to match a 1- to 2-foot length of 3/4-inch diameter chain. Make sure you use exterior rated spray paint. Let the paint dry.
- 7). Weave the plug of the power cord through the links of the chain. Insert a screw eye hook to the center of the base of the planter, next to the power cord exit. Hook the link of the end of the chain to the hook.
- 8). Attach the other end of the chain to a hook hanging in your garden or on your patio. Connect the power cord to an exterior rated extension cord to power the hanging light.
