How to Make a Water Filter Using Dirt

40
    • 1). Find an empty container, such as a tin or aluminum can or plastic water bottle. If using a water bottle, cut the top off. Poke five to 10 holes into the bottom of your container.

    • 2). Crush charcoal if you've built a fire into the size of fine gravel (don't crush it into a powder) and spread it across the bottom of the container in a 1/2-inch to 1-inch thick layer. The charcoal will make your water filter more effective, and the water will be safer to drink.

    • 3). Fill the container one-third of the way with a layer of course gravel or pebbles if you do not have charcoal. (Those who have charcoal can forgo this, but adding a layer of course gravel will ensure that your water filter works well.)

    • 4). Layer four to six inches of sand or finer gravel on top of the course gravel and/or charcoal. Multiple layers are necessary to an effective filter.

    • 5). Put another container or cup under the holes of your gravel filter. If you have a small cup, set it down and hold the water filter above it.

    • 6). Collect some water using a third container or cup. Pour the water through the filter, and catch what comes out in the cup below. If the water in your catch cup isn't clear, pour it back through the filter as necessary until it is clear--then it will be safe to drink.
