How to Repair the Wiper Arms on a Hyundai Excel

10
    • 1). Park the windshield wipers on your Excel in the lowest position on the windshield and then turn off the power to them. Raise your hood and use a socket wrench to disconnect the negative cable from your car's battery. Lower the hood but do not let it shut completely. Allow it to simply rest on the hood latch.

    • 2). Trace the length of your Excel's wiper blades with a grease pencil on the windshield. While you're tracing the blades, do not touch them or you may alter their preset positioning. For the best results, trace along the top of your Excel's wiper blades as well as the bottom of the blades. This way, you eliminate guesswork in the event one of the lines gets smeared accidentally.

    • 3). Follow your Excel's wiper arm down to where it connects at the base of your windshield. You should see a rounded cap that measures roughly one inch long. Lift the base of the cap slightly with a flat-head screwdriver to dislodge it. Grasp the cap between two fingers and pull it horizontally off the wiper arm's securing nut. Put the cap in your pocket for safekeeping because it can easily be cracked or broken.

    • 4). Use a socket wrench to remove the nut that you now see securing your Excel's wiper arm. Grasp the wiper arm near the wiper blade with one hand. With your available hand, grasp the wiper arm near its base at the windshield. Lift the wiper blade off the windshield and carefully wiggle the wiper arm off its connecting shaft.

    • 5). Lower your Excel's new wiper arm down onto its connecting shaft. Before you push down on the wiper arm and lock it into place, check the position of the wiper blade on the windshield. The wiper blade should line up perfectly with the upper and lower grease pencil lines that you drew on the windshield.

    • 6). Push down on your Excel's new wiper arm at its base, near the connecting shaft. You should feel the wiper arm pop back into place on the shaft. Thread the wiper arm's securing nut by hand. Set your 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to 13 foot-lbs. and secure the nut in place.

    • 7). Reinstall the concealing cap over the wiper arm's mounting nut. Place the cap over the nut, push it forward slightly and then push down on the cap with your thumb. You should hear a faint click to let you know that the cap has fully seated itself over the nut.

    • 8). Lift and support your Excel's hood once more. Reset the torque wrench to 12 foot-lbs. then connect and secure your Excel's negative cable back to its post on the battery. Shut the hood securely and wipe the grease pencil lines off the windshield with a shop rag.
