Home Remedy for a Burnt Tongue
- Mix 1 teaspoon of salt in 1 cup of warm water and stir. Hold the rinse in your mouth for up to 30 seconds, using your tongue and cheeks to move it around over the burnt area of the tongue. If you still feel pain, take a new mouthful of water and repeat the process. Not only will salt water rinse soothe the pain, it will also bring the infection to the surface of the tongue. The salt neutralizes any acids in your mouth, which trigger the harmful growth of bacteria. By eliminating the growth of bacteria, this salt water rinse helps your burnt tongue heal faster.
- If you do not have salt water, soothe the burnt tongue with something cold, just as you would with any burn. If you have access to a sink or drinking fountain, hold your tongue under the cold water as you allow the coldness to cancel out the heat. Or drink a glass of cold water, holding it in your mouth for a few seconds before swallowing.
The pain of a burnt tongue can last for several days. Throughout this period, you will likely want to re-introduce coldness to the tongue regularly. Sucking on an ice cube, or eating a popsicle or ice cream, helps alleviate the pain. - A burnt tongue often results in a dry mouth, so take extra precautions to stay hydrated and keep your mouth and tongue moisturized. Drink plenty of cold or cool water throughout the day, but avoid drinking hot beverages.
Suck on a piece of hard candy or chew a piece of gum to initiate the release of saliva, which moisturizes the tongue and mouth. For quick relief from pain, put a few drops of honey or a small amount of sugar directly on the tongue.
Avoid eating hot, acidic or spicy foods until your burnt tongue has healed completely.
