Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan Made of Honor Press Conference

With the kind of fallout of the writers strike and then the SAG strike looming, is there tension on the Grey's Anatomy set because you might not be able to come back and do those other shows?

Patrick Dempsey: “No, I think we have so much work to do right now that people are just trying to survive the days because the network and the studio wanted to have more products so they forced us to do a two-parter and that caught everybody by surprise.

So we’re doing two units, shooting everything in 16 hour days. The thing is just trying to stay fresh, especially at the end of the day where you’re not giving up on the scenes, you’re working really hard. It’s like, ‘Finish strong.’ It’s like all these things you can do to keep yourself mentally focused. And don't forget how important it is. You’re in this little environment and you don’t realize the impact outside of that environment, so you have to stay really focused and work hard and do it for the sake of doing it. And don’t forget to be really grateful that you have that opportunity. That’s the thing I keep reminding myself. It’s like, ‘Don’t forget that.’”

You said that the atmosphere on the show is better than last year. Has that continued?

Patrick Dempsey: “I think so. I think everybody is dealing with things differently. I can only sort of control my own feelings about it.”

Are you signed up for an Enchanted sequel?

Patrick Dempsey: “Well, technically yeah. Anytime you do a movie like that they have you set up, in success, to do a sequel.

But they have to figure out - I don’t know what the story would be at this point. They have to work on that. We’ll see. If it’s a good story, it could be fun to see where those characters go. You look at romantic comedies and certainly, thrillers and stuff like that. I have to be very careful about what I do, but I want to stir it up a little bit, do something that's a little more dramatic at times. But I think the world we live in right now, you just want something that’s entertaining. I know I do. I just want to go escape for an hour and a half. You don’t want to think about it too much.”

Michelle, on the other hand, you have Eagle Eye coming up which taps into those fears that people have about a terrorist.

Michelle Monaghan: “Well, I love…it’s a very, very exciting movie. I think people aren’t really clear on what the movie is about. It’s not really terrorist-driven. It’s really a race against time, basically. It’s about all the technology that permeates us, permeates our lives on a daily basis - your ATM, your cell phone, and things like that. And for me, that’s just a really, really exciting genre to be a part of. It’s stunts and actions and all these things. It’s a very, very exciting movie, so I’m happy to step into a different genre.”

Patrick Dempsey: “But she just produced a movie too.”

Michelle Monaghan: “Yes, I did. It just premiered at Tribeca. Trucker just premiered on Thursday night.”

Patrick Dempsey: “You play a truck driver?”

Michelle Monaghan: “I’m very proud of that film.”

Patrick Dempsey: “You have your license, right?”

Michelle Monaghan: “Yeah.”

Patrick Dempsey: “I bet they’d love to see you drive a truck. How does that go?”

Michelle Monaghan: (Laughing) Yeah.”

How did you get in touch with you inner trucker?

Michelle Monaghan: “I went to truck driving school. Basically what I did right after Made of Honor, I went to Scotland and from Scotland to Arcadia, California. That’s what I did. I went on some short hauls with some female truckers and that was it. It’s the most amazing female role that I’ve ever read in my life and I feel so grateful to have gotten to play it. It’s a really honest portrayal of a woman.”

What’s the story? What kind of truck does she drive?

Michelle Monaghan: “It’s an 18 wheeler, a 53-foot trailer. She works independent. She owns her truck, and it’s basically about a woman who abandoned her son 11 years prior. The movie essentially opens with her returning from a long haul and her son knocking on her door. He’s 11-years-old and her ex-husband, the child’s father, is sick and in the hospital and she needs to look after him for three weeks. Essentially it’s about their journey and really getting to know each other for the first time, and her not really necessarily wanting to be a mom now either. And a wonderful, wonderful actor, Jimmy Bennett, who plays my son.”

Michelle, weren’t you signed on for Wolverine?

Michelle Monaghan: “No, they were mistaken.”
