How to Control Your Skateboard

46
    • 1). Move the skateboard to a grassy area and stand on top of it. Place your feet on the board just behind the truck screws located near the ends of the board. Point your toes off the side of the board.

    • 2). Practice bending your knees while you stand on the board. This prepares your legs to absorb any shocks that you'll encounter as you ride. It also helps you keep a firm stance on the board.

    • 3). Lean your toes against the edge of the board. This action enables you to turn in the direction your toes are pointing. Leaning back on your heels will let you turn your board in the direction your heels are facing.

    • 4). Gently lean forward if you want the board to turn to the side. Lean back if you want it to turn the other way.

    • 5). Practice riding your board on a flat surface once you feel comfortable with your ability to balance. Push off the ground using your back foot. Only push yourself short distances at first, however.

    • 6). Keep your front foot firmly planted on the board. This keeps the board from veering off course or shooting out from under you.

    • 7). Lean back and forth on the board as you move forward in order to practice turning. Brake by dragging your back foot -- or the back of the board -- against the cement.
