Outdoor Lighting Safety

11
Winter is still among us and we want our outdoor lighting to lighten many areas of our home and garden during the hours of early darkness for the safety and pleasure of our families and guests.
Many of us come home from work during the early evening and it is now dark so we need to have some outdoor lighting to secure our homes and the safety of others.
Would-be burglars prefer the extended hours of darkness, plus those added hours could possibly put our loved ones in danger of injury around some of the areas surrounding our homes.
We are still in the dark when we arrive home from work every night and by using a remote control device we can turn outside lights on and also the lights inside our homes.
Dusk-to-dawn sensors allow us to convert traditional lights or a lawn lamp-post to lights that come on at dusk and off at dawn for safety.
The majority of our exterior lights are best if they are outdoor security lights that brighten up all entryways or walkways leading to our homes.
We may even want to consider motion-detection lights, when some type of movement is sensed at all entrances to our homes.
This type of lighting is also excellent for detached garages, storage sheds, gates, and for garages that are attached to the house.
Dusk-to-dawn sensors and motion-detection lights are also good for covered porches for illuminating the area to welcome guests to our homes.
Even if we do not have a covered entryway, outdoor wall lighting, wall lanterns, or lamp posts not only add safety but a little decoration to the outside of our homes.
We need to purchase lights that are made for outside use so they will withstand all of Mother Nature's elements.
Since we now have more hours of darkness we seem to use more electricity.
This is the best time to replace all the old bulbs with compact fluorescent light or CFL bulbs.
These CFL bulbs will use 75 percent less energy and will last about 10 times longer than the older standard bulbs.
We will also be able to save about 70 dollars yearly by also using CFLs in the light fixtures that are inside our homes.
Low voltage lighting is the type of outdoor landscape lighting that uses just 12 volts of electricity instead of 120 volts.
Using this 12-volt system will not require you to hire an electrician for installation.
They are safe and easy to work with, and are quite popular with many homeowners.
An added benefit of the 12-volt system is that light fixtures can be added on and adjusted even though they are plugged in and working.
Outdoor lighting low voltage kits are very affordable and are usually found in home and garden centers and many hardware stores.
Solar lighting now seems to be very popular among homeowners because you do not any wiring to worry about and they do not need to be plugged in anywhere.
There is a wide selection of styles to choose and they are easy to install and the upkeep is very simple.
Solar outdoor lighting is an easy way to lighten up walkways, garden pathways, pool areas, and steps.
These lights use photo cells that charge a solar battery or NiCad battery during daytime hours and will send power to the light during the night.
Solar lighting kits do not have wiring unless you purchase the ones used as spotlights to shed light on objects that are in the shade.
These units use a solar panel that is detached with a thin wire from the light source, this way the light is situated in the shade and the solar panel is sitting in a sunny area absorbing the energy.
Deck lighting is outdoor lighting that can be used on decks, porches, or balconies.
The lights can be mounted on steps, around the perimeter of a deck and on deck railings for safety and entertaining.
There are also lights that can be installed flush with the floor of the deck and can be walked on without damaging the light.
Outdoor string lighting or rope lighting is good for illuminating entertaining spaces or sitting areas.
Your home and garden will be a better place to enjoy and host guests with the safety of outdoor lighting.
