How to Install Glass Pack Mufflers
- 1). Jack up the car and install jack stands under the frame. Use a tape measure and determine the overall length of the new glass-pack muffler.
- 2). Measure the length of the existing muffler and notice how it is mounted in the vehicle. If it is bolted in place, use a socket wrench and remove it. If it is welded in place, use a paint pen and mark the exhaust pipe -- both front and rear -- three to four inches shorter on each end than the overall length of the glass pack, for a total of six to eight inches shorter overall.
- 3). Cut the exhaust pipe with an electric cut-off saw. Be sure and wear safety glasses. Measure the cut pipe and determine the diameter. Glass packs are manufactured with a "2 inch," inside diameter and are designed to fit over a "2 inch," outside diameter pipe. Most standard exhaust systems are far less in size.
- 4). Select an appropriate sized exhaust pipe adapter that will mate the existing exhaust pipe to the glass pack. Adapters are readily available and come in a all standard sizes from "1,1/4 inch," and up. Install the adapters and clamp them securely on the existing exhaust pipes with muffler clamps. Slide the glass pack between the pipes and fit it into place on the adapters. Install muffler clamps on the glass pack.
- 5). Install a universal muffler hanger on the glass pack by fitting it onto one of the muffler clamps and attaching it to the muffler bracket that is original to the car. This is the preferred method for securing the muffler in place; however, in some cases a new bracket will need to be fabricated.
