How to Convert Weights to Metric
- 1). Convert the weight into pounds. If the original weight is in tons, multiply by 2,000. If in ounces, divide by 16. If in pounds and ounces -- for example, 1 pound, 4 ounces -- divide the number of ounces by 16 and add to the number of pounds -- 4/16 equals 0.25, and 1 + 0.25 equals 1.25.
- 2). Convert the number of pounds into kilograms. To do this, multiply the number of pounds by 0.453. In the example, 1.25 pounds equals 0.57 kilograms.
- 3). Convert from kilograms to some other metric unit, if necessary. In the example, 0.57 kilograms is reasonable. You can express it in grams by multiplying by 1,000, so 1.25 pounds equals 570 grams. For weights between 1,000 kilograms and 1 million kilograms, you could convert to megagrams by dividing by 1,000. For weights much less than a gram, but more than 1/1000th of a gram, use milligrams by dividing kilograms by 1 million.
