Help for Windows Installer Error for Vista 64-Bit

1

Run the Program With Elevated Privileges

    • The installation error on Vista 64-bit can occur for both normal and command-line program installations. In both cases, you can elevate your privileges when running the installation program so that your computer won't error out. To do this for a normal installation, right-click on the set-up or installation EXE file and select the option to "Run as Administrator." This will launch the set-up program with administrator privileges applied.

If you need to run a set-up program from the command line, it's the same general process, since you will first have to open a command prompt that has administrator privileges enabled on it. To do this, click on the "Start" button, go to "All Programs," then go to the "Accessories" section and right-click on the "Command Prompt" program. Choose the "Run as administrator" option, and a command prompt window will launch that has administrator privileges enabled. This will allow you to run your installation program without encountering an installer error message.

    Disable User Account Control

    • If you routinely run into trouble installing programs in Vista 64-bit, then you can disable the User Account Control (UAC) system. This will turn off the (potentially annoying) prompts that pop up nearly every time you try to complete an action and can allow you to install software without running into an installer error.

To disable UAC, you'll need to open the Control Panel by clicking on the "Start" button. Click on the "User Accounts and Family Safety" section of the Control Panel, then click the "User Accounts" section. Inside the window that says "Make changes to your user account" you need to click the option to "Turn User Account Control on or off." You will have to confirm that you want to access this setting, then you can uncheck the box to "Use UAC to help protect your computer," then press the "OK" button. To apply this setting, you need to restart your computer, which can you do immediately or wait until later to perform. Once you restart your computer, try installing a program and see if the same error message occurs.
