How to Clean a Windows XP Profile
- 1). Double-click the red "X" that appears in the Windows system tray. This displays the files that are saved in your profile. Identify the files that are the largest to move them. Files saved to the profile are located in your "My Documents" folder.
- 2). Double-click the "My Computer" icon on the desktop. Double-click the "C:\" drive.
- 3). Double-click the "Documents and Settings" directory. This opens a list of file folders that correspond with usernames created on the computer. Double-click the file folder that corresponds with the username that is currently logged into the computer.
- 4). Double-click the "My Documents" folder. Cut and paste large documents to another directory located on the machine. You can also save these files to a backup drive or a network location.
- 5). Go back to the "C:\Documents and Settings\<username>" folder. Double-click the "Application Data" folder. Within this directory, temporary files are saved. If the computer is shut down abnormally, these files are left in the directories and accumulate, consuming large amounts of storage space.
- 6). Double-click the "Word" directory and delete the .tmp files.
- 7). Go back to the user directory and double-click the "Media Catalog" directory. Delete files ending with .nmc.
- 8). Go back to the user directory and double-click the "Cookies" folder. Delete all cookie files except the "Index.dat" file.
- 9). Go back to the user folder once again and double-click the "Office" directory. Delete files that end in .acl.

Close the Explorer window and reboot the machine for changes to take effect and remove the warning icon from the system tray.
