How to Configure Virtual PC 2007

2
    • 1). Open the Virtual PC 2007 application and click the "New" button on the Virtual PC Console window. Alternatively, when running Virtual PC 2007 for the first time, the New Virtual Machine Wizard starts automatically. Click "Next" when the wizard starts. To create a pre-configured virtual machine, click on the radio button next to the second option. To create a virtual machine that you will configure yourself, leave the selected option at "Create a virtual machine" and click the "Next" button again.

    • 2). Change the name of your virtual machine to something descriptive, or leave the default name alone. Click the "Browse" button and choose a location to save the virtual machine's file. The default location is under your "documents" folder in a sub-folder called "My Virtual Machines."

    • 3). Click the drop-down box labeled "operating system" and select the operating system you plan to install on the new virtual machine. Virtual PC 2007 does not include any operating system files; you will need to furnish them later. On the right, you will see changes made under "default hardware selection" based on which operating system you choose. Click the "Next" button to continue.

    • 4). Click the radio button next to "Adjusting the RAM" to adjust the amount of computer memory the virtual machine will use. Use the sliding bar that appears to set the memory amount, but keep in mind that your computer's real operating system--not the one you are installing on Virtual PC--also needs a minimum amount of memory to run. Set the virtual machine's memory as close to the default amount as possible. Click "Next" to continue.

    • 5). Click on the radio button next to "A new virtual hard disk" and then click the "Next" button. Set the size of your virtual hard drive in megabytes (MB). Click "Next" again and then click "Finish" at the final screen. To use the machine, click on it in the Virtual PC console and then click the "Start" button.
