How to Build a Model of a Forest Ecosystem

1
    • 1). Determine what type of forest ecosystem you wish to represent.

    • 2). Research the divisions of the forest biome you've chosen. Each type of forest biome is broken up into zones, each of which has different types of life. You will need to represent each zone in your model.

    • 3). Determine what types of life dominate each zone. It will be impossible to represent all types of life, but you should know the basics.

    • 4). Cut off one long side of the shoebox with a utility knife and recycle it, along with the box top. Your shoebox should now have three sides and a bottom.

    • 5). Pick one short end to be the top and one to be the bottom. Stand the box upright. Divide the box into the number of zones present in your chosen type of forest ecosystem. Using a marker, label the zones clearly.

    • 6). Draw the types of life present at each zone using crayons, markers or colored pencils. Alternatively, cut out pictures of plants and animals out of magazines and glue them in or use toys or model railroad scenery. If you wish, collect real ground cover from the forest floor to rest on the bottom of the box.
