Viewing Processes

• The chief function of the Windows XP task manager is to allow a user to see any and all processes currently running on her system. While any programs that are running will be easily viewable on her task bar, the task manager allows her to see absolutely everything, including the hidden programs that run on startup that allow Windows to run properly.
  
  A user can also see any nonessential utilities that are running that may have been installed during the installation of other programs.
  
  The task manager also displays exactly how many resources a specific program is taking up, which will allow the user to see exactly why a system is running slower than usual should that problem arise.
  
  

Terminating Processes

• The task manager also gives users the ability to terminate any processes they see fit. Sometimes background utilities are installed without a user's knowledge during the installation of other programs, and can be easily disabled using the task manager. As each process also has information about how much of your system's resources it is currently using, sometimes it may become necessary to terminate them to maintain a smoothly running computer. Terminating a program through the task manager may also be necessary if a program stops responding to commands.
  
  Listed will also be programs that are essential to the Windows operating system, and terminating them will cause the system to shut itself down. The user will be prompted with a warning detailing this information, however, should she try for whatever reason to end them.
  
  

System Resources

• In addition to detailed information on processes currently being run by the computer, the Windows XP task manager also allows the user to view the integrity of her system at any given moment. Using dedicated tabs within the task manager, a user can view detailed information about exactly how much her CPU is being used at any given moment, how much RAM is being used, the speed of her network connection, and what percent of her bandwidth is currently being utilized. These can all be incredibly helpful tools if a computer is starting to lag or run slowly, and can allow you to get to the bottom of any problems that may arise.
