Bathroom Cleaning Solutions
- If you want to use commercial cleaners, you will need at least three types -- an all-purpose bathroom cleaner, a glass cleaner for mirrors and a toilet bowl cleaner. You can use the all-purpose cleaner for the outer parts of toilets, sinks, tiles, grout and tubs. Commercial cleaners may contain chemicals with harsh fumes, so exercise caution when purchasing these products, or look for labels that read "green" or "natural."
- White vinegar is a natural all-purpose cleaner ideal for porcelain and glass surfaces. You can spray it directly over your bath tub, shower, tiles and sinks full strength. If you choose to use vinegar as a glass cleaner, though, dilute the vinegar with water. Mix 2 tbsp. vinegar with 1 qt. of water and spray it over your mirrors. Vinegar can also remove rust and minerals.
- Baking soda paste can remove dirt and stains safely from all bathroom fixtures. To make a paste, you will need approximately 1/4 cup of water and 3/4 cup of baking soda, or just 1 part water and 3 parts baking soda. If necessary, add additional water or baking soda until you have a thick consistency. Use a scrub brush to apply the baking soda to porcelain and tile surfaces.
- Lemon juice contains citric acid, an ideal cleaning solution for porcelain. A University of Missouri Extension report recommends lemon juice as an effective killer of mildew, so if your tiles or other bathroom fixtures harbor mildew, lemon juice can serve as one of your best lines of defense. Just spray the lemon juice, full strength, over bathroom surfaces, allow 15 minutes for disinfecting and rinse. Reader's Digest also recommends lemon juice for cleaning brass surfaces, so if you have brass fixtures, like faucets, try wiping them down with lemon juice.
