How to Sharpen a Serrated Blade

    • 1). Match your tool to your knife. Ordinary kitchen honing rods can be used for bread knives and some serrated kitchen knives, while other heavy duty blades require specialized serration-sharpening tools. A combination serration-sharpener, which has a triangular rod with rounded edges, will sharpen most kinds of serrated blades and saves you the need for multiple tools to sharpen different serrated knives. The quickest way to check if your tool will sharpen a given serrated knife is to lay it inside the gullet. If the rod fits and makes contact with the entire surface of the gullet, it will sharpen that knife.

    • 2). Lay the knife on the table so the serrated blade is in the air and parallel to the table. The blade should not be touching the table.

    • 3). Set the rod of the sharpening tool inside the one of the two outermost gullets of the serrated blade. Rub the rod against the gullet in a back-and-forth motion, turning the rod to the right and left as you rub it against the gullet. Continue for 20 to 30 seconds.

    • 4). Move down to the next gullet and repeat the procedure for 20 to 30 seconds, and so on down the blade until every gullet has been sharpened.

    • 5). Put a razor sharp edge on the serrations with multiple turns of sharpening. Start the procedure with a rough-grit sharpening rod and follow Steps 2 through 4 as normal. Then use a medium-grit rod and finally a fine-grit rod. The method is akin to sanding down a wood surface to a smooth finish.
