My Windows XP SP2 Setup Key Won't Work

    • 1). Verify that you are entering the proper setup key for the Windows SP2 disk you are installing from. The key is located on the back of the CD packaging or inside the case, usually on a holographic or yellow sticker. If you are installing using multiple CDs, note that some Microsoft CDs may be for installing Microsoft Office or another Microsoft software product with a different key.

    • 2). Check the side of the computer itself for a Windows XP key. If you bought your computer with WIndows already installed and need to reinstall, you should use the Windows XP product key located on the information sticker on the computer.

    • 3). Verify the product key is being entered properly. Sometimes zeros can appear to be the letter "O" with the reverse also being true. Also the number "1" is sometimes mistaken for the letters "L" or "i."

    • 4). Verify that the "num lock" or "caps lock" key is not enabled on your computer's keyboard. Some keyboards have a small light on the key. If lit press, the key to disable. Other keyboards have small status lights on the top of the keyboard. Make sure the "num lock" or "caps lock" status lights are off.
