Security Updates Location

• Click the "Start" menu and select the "Control Panel." Select the "Security Center" option to open a dialog box that provides the update options.
  
  

Automatic Updates

• Select "Automatic" for the best protection. This is the standard and recommended setting for installing updates. The computer will automatically scan the Internet for new updates at the time you designate. If your computer is turned off at that time, it will scan the Internet for updates when you connect again.
  
  

Manual Installation

• Choose "Download Updates for Me, but Let Me Choose When to Install Them" if you plan to do the installation of new updates on your own. The computer will scan the Internet for available updates and download them, but it will not install them. However, you should keep in mind that the updates will not do you any good if you do not install them.
  
  

Update Notifications

• Opt for "Notify Me but Don't Automatically Download or Install Them" if you want to do all the work on your own. Some updates can be quite time consuming to download, so you should only choose this option if you are going to be diligent about following through on the notification.
  
  

No Updates

• Never choose "Turn Off Automatic Updates." This severely limits the ability of your computer to maintain a safe working environment. Without current updates, harmful viruses can enter your computer and cause damage to your files and hard drive. This option is never recommended.
