Are We There Yet? Three Symptoms of the Mid-Life Crisis

1
Men and women often experience different symptoms of the midlife crisis, but the ones that are common to us all will be easily recognisable.
Not everyone believes in the midlife crisis; at least, not until it happens to them; and all of a sudden, they feel like they're a kid stuck in the back of a car with someone else in the driving seat, asking that all important question; Are we there yet? Here are my top three factors in any midlife crisis.
Boredom When you were a child and you were bored, you'd be told off for it by a parent or a teacher.
"Go and find something to do.
" After flinging yourself on your bed/sofa and having a tantrum, you would invariably find something to occupy yourself.
We are fairly resourceful and when we put our minds to it, we can entertain ourselves quite well.
But the boredom of a midlife crisis is really something else.
Mind crunching boredom often stems from depression and a disinterest in life and self and at this stage of our lives will invariably bring about feelings of guilt.
It can also lead to the next item in our list, which is...
Impulsiveness It's often seen as a good trait, to be impulsive.
It implies freedom of spirit and so on.
In a midlife crisis, it sends up a red flag.
If you're bored with your life then impulsiveness can lead to inappropriate or just plain bad decisions.
Buying a sports car or a bike is one thing.
Leaving a job that you were good at without anything else to go to is another, as is starting an affair when to date, you've been in a happy relationship.
Emptiness If no one has ever mentioned this before, a midlife crisis is about one thing.
We're not always honest about this, but it's about mortality and fear of death.
There you go, I've said it.
When you realise that you have as much life behind you as you have ahead of you, this can make your life feel like water draining through an emptying sink.
In combination, these three factors can make you feel pretty bad.
And a midlife crisis doesn't exist? OK then.
So, are we there yet? Don't be in too much of a hurry.
These years, if we approach them with optimism, can be the among best years of our lives.
We have a natural change of heart when the kids leave home, we lose a parent, we change jobs, etc.
And while initially it knocks our confidence and can impact upon our self esteem and our waistlines, we have so much going for us.
A midlife crisis doesn't have to be a crisis.
A midlife change of heart brings about exciting opportunities.
Boredom can be cured, impulsiveness can be used positively, careers can be changed and mindsets made more positive.
