How to Install Windows XP Pro on a Windows 98 System

    • 1). Load the Windows XP Pro installation CD into the computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Restart the computer after inserting the XP CD. Hit any key on the keyboard when prompted to "Press any key to boot from CD."

    • 2). Press the "Enter" key as soon as the "Welcome to Setup" window displays on the monitor. Look over the XP Pro software terms and press the "F8" key if you agree with them to continue. Select the hard disk drive as the location to install XP and hit the "Enter" key to continue. The computer will restart after the XP Pro files are copied to the hard drive.

    • 3). Enter the appropriate geographic region and preferred language on the Windows XP setup screen. Use the keyboard to type in your name and any organization with which the computer is associated. Enter the 25-character product key packaged with the Windows XP Pro operating system.

    • 4). Type in a name for the computer and enter a password to create an administrative account on the XP Pro operating system. Select the correct date, time and time zone for your location. Choose the "Typical" option on the "Network Settings" screen and press the "Next" button to continue.

    • 5). Enter the work group the computer is connected with if it is linked to a system of connected computers (such as an office network). Press the "Next" button and you will be brought to the Windows XP Pro "Welcome" message. XP Pro now will be installed on the Windows 98 system and ready to use after the installation is complete.
