How to Fasten a Stair Rail to Concrete
- 1). Lay out the bracket locations on the railing following the minimal requirements found in your local building codes. Fasten the brackets at the layout points scribed on the railing using the correct fasteners and tools.
- 2). Place the railing against the wall so that the brackets are flush against the concrete. Make any slight adjustments so that the railing is in the spot where it will be secured. Transfer marks through the pre-drilled holes located at the base of the brackets onto the face of the concrete wall using a marker.
- 3). Refer to the fastener packaging to find the correct masonry bit diameter and drilling depth. Equip the hammer drill with this masonry bit and set the depth gauge if the tool has this feature. Measure the masonry bit with a tape measure and place tape around the shaft if the drill doesn't feature a depth gauge.
- 4). Drill the marks that were made on the concrete wall using the hammer drill. Clean out the drilled holes using a metal bristle pipe brush. Blow or suck any debris and dust from the holes using forced air from a compressor or a vacuum with a hose.
- 5). Hold the railing in place, aligning the bracket holes to the holes drilled into the concrete wall. Slide concrete fasteners through the railing brackets and into the concrete wall. Tighten the fasteners using the correct tool.
