How to Replace Hardwood Floor Boards
- 1). Remove the damaged section by hammering the prybar between the boards--either at the ends or the sides--and prying them out. Only put the prybar between boards that are both being removed. If it's just one board surrounded by other boards that will stay in place, then split the damaged board in the middle by driving the sharp end of the prybar straight down into it, then pull up the split sections.
- 2). Measure the space for your new floorboards. Make the cuts on your miter saw.
- 3). Slide the new pieces into place from the side, locking the tongue-and-groove system by holding a scrap tongue-and-groove piece against it and tapping the scrap with your hammer (to avoid hammer damage to the new pieces). Nail the new pieces down with trim nails. Do all but the final piece this way.
- 4). Use your hammer and chisel on the final piece to remove the bottom strip of wood under the groove on one side, so it's open from the bottom. Set the board in place, putting the remaining top side of the groove over the tongue of the piece next it to. Secure it with trim nails.
