How to Protect Cabinets

    • 1). Apply a UV-protective (ultraviolet-protective) clear coat after painting or staining, before installing the doors and drawers. When the top coat is completely dry, paint an even coat of protective clear coat. Allow it to dry overnight. If you aren't refacing your cabinets but want to add a protective coating, remove the doors and fixtures with a screwdriver, clean all surfaces thoroughly with all-purpose cleaner, and apply the clear coat.

    • 2). Remove the shelves in your cabinets and clean them with all-purpose cleaner. Allow the surface to dry completely.

    • 3). Unroll the shelf paper. Place a shelf on top, lining up the corners. Trace around the other two sides. Cut the shelf paper to size.

    • 4). Peel the backing from the cut piece of shelf paper, but do not remove it completely. Line up the exposed edge to the corresponding shelf edge. Press the shelf paper to the shelf, slowly sliding the backing off as you apply it to the surface. Trim the edges with a craft knife, if necessary.

    • 5). Replace the shelves in the cabinets. Reattach the doors and fixtures and slide the drawers in place.
