How to Destroy Weeds That Become Trees
- 1). Create a groove or cut on the trunk of the undesirable tree that is 1/2-inch in depth, 1 to 2 inches in length and 1 inch in width, using a hatchet.
- 2). Cut another groove next to the one you made in Step 1 that is the same shape and size. Continue making grooves or cuts around the circumference of the tree. This practice is called girdling, which disrupts the weed tree's ability to transport nutrients and water.
- 3). Pour a herbicide that contains glyphosate into a spray bottle. Glyphosate is an active ingredient used in broad-spectrum herbicides.
- 4). Lay a piece of plastic underneath the tree. Spray the cuts with the herbicide. Avoid spraying too much, or you could get the herbicide on surrounding plants. Remove the piece of plastic.
- 5). Reapply the spray until it appears that the weedy tree has died. Signs that the tree has died include defoliation, discoloration and stunted growth.
