How to Install a Kitchen Pantry With a Desk Space
- 1). Measure your kitchen to define how much floor space you have. Consider taking out a bar or counter to create a storage wall serving as a pantry. Look for space inside a nearby laundry area that you could reconfigure to fit into the kitchen plan as well. A pantry can be along one wall or in a stand-alone room. Carve out space for the desk that is near the pantry and the cooking areas.
- 2). Order cabinets, a desk and wooden file cabinets, recessed lighting and new tile or wood flooring, if you will need new flooring. Make notes on each cabinet size to design space to fit exact measurements. Buy the best cabinets and desk you can afford. Engage an electrician to climb into attic areas of your home to wire overhead recessed lighting near each pantry cabinet opening. Hire someone who has worked on upscale homes, not just a licensed electrician. His input will make the difference in how professional the project looks.
- 3). Engage a carpenter to help if you install pantry cabinets that will attach to your home's framework. Make sure he uses 4-inch or longer flat-head stainless steel screws. You don't want the cabinets to pull loose from the walls. Install the desk into floor space by nailing crown molding to the floor along each side of your desk. This method works best if the desk has significant space on each side.
- 4). Plan to install counter space in the pantry area and near your desk. When you organize the desk area or pantry, you need flat surfaces to park food items or paperwork temporarily. Counters do not need to rest on top of a floor cabinet, but they do need to be installed tightly into wall studs. Use angle iron support pieces to support counters from underneath. Never attach counters directly to pantry cabinets. Fit them seamlessly in front of the cabinets or beside them, so the cabinets will not bear the weight.
- 5). Utilize the option to place free-standing cabinets in a pantry room. However, consider attaching nice shelving or just the desk for an installed look. Properly installed high-end cabinetry adds value to your house. Make it a priority to create congruent flooring between two areas. Create a smooth flow between rooms you've connected by installing high-end floor tile. Changing the color or flow of wood flooring is more difficult.
