A Review of Mud - The Film

4
Could you possibly attend a film called "Mud" with a straight face, especially when you are reviewing it? It's not the best film of the century and it doesn't really have too much of a plot. And, to be honest, it's kind of been done before. "Castaway" springs to mind with Tom Hans, although that had a different storyline, the concept was similar.

The film is about a man on the run, played by Matthew McConaughey, who finds himself hiding on an island. Nearby are 2 young teenage friends, from Alabama, called Ellis and Neckbone, living with their families. Looking for something to do one day, they make their way out to the island and, thanks to a flood, find a boat caught in the trees along with a scruffy looking man called Mud. Being teenagers and not really thinking as clearly as they should be, they listen to his story and agree to help Mud reunite with a long-lost girlfriend.

And so it begins. A series of events that serve only to draw the 2 friends into deeper and deeper trouble, thinking only of finding the girl and reuniting them. To be fair, the ending was exactly what you thought it would be - they find each other again and reunite. Written by Jeff Nicholls and released in 2012, Mud is a coming-of-age story that doesn't seem to have been really thought out. While the teenage characters acted as teenagers do, the adult characters lacked reality.
Okay, so Mud is just a film but, what is really about? What's the message? There's always a message somewhere in a film, right? There's a touch of preaching about the film - men, you really shouldn't lay it all on the line for a girl. It's similar to the old joke about rubbing a bottle and out pops a genie to grant 3 wishes. If one of these wishes is to try and understand the mind of a woman or how she thinks, forget it - it's just not going to happen.

On the one hand, it's a very simplistic, possibly unbelievable story, unless you can honestly say, hand on heart that you've come across a strange man living on an island before now. On the other hand, it is receiving rave reviews so perhaps there is something in the film that is only apparent to some people. Perhaps it is a film that should be watched with a very open and receptive mind.
