How to Build a Countertop Over a Washer & Dryer
- 1). Remove the washer and dryer from the alcove so you have room to work.
- 2). Measure the height of your washer and dryer and the depth of the alcove. Using a pencil, mark the wall 1 inch above the washer height, all the way around the alcove, using a level and a yardstick. With the stud finder, locate the studs and mark the center of each on the wall, 2 inches above the horizontal line.
- 3). Screw the 24-inch boards to the wall, with the bottom just touching the horizontal line and centering the screws on the studs. Use the 3-inch screws.
- 4). Measure the width of the alcove in between the boards. Cut the 8-foot board to that length. Screw to the wall, again centering the screws on the studs.
- 5). Measure the width of the alcove again, and cut the countertop to the exact length of the space. With a helper, set the countertop on top of the 2-by-2 supports. Crawl underneath the countertop and pre-drill two holes per side and four across the back, up through the supports and ¼ inch into the bottom of the countertop. Screw the countertop to the supports, using the 2-inch screws. Caulk along the edges where the wall and countertop meet.
- 6). Reinstall the washer and dryer in the alcove.
