How to Replace a Vinyl Composition Floor Tile
- 1). Tape paper grocery bags over the tiles surrounding the damaged tile.
- 2). Place a warm iron on the damaged tile. Heat the tile up enough to soften it, but don't melt the tile.
- 3). Cut diagonally across the tile in both directions with a utility knife.
- 4). Pry the sections up with a putty knife and remove them from the floor.
- 5). Apply mineral spirits to the area of the floor where the damaged tile was to loosen any remaining adhesive, and scrape it up with the putty knife. Do not dig into subfloor with the putty knife.
- 6). Apply a new layer of adhesive to the subfloor with a putty knife.
- 7). Place the new tile on top of the adhesive. Wipe away any adhesive that seeps up through the seams, using a rag.
- 8). Cover the tile with wax paper and place books on it for 24 hours to weigh it down.
