DIY How to Install Laminate Countertops

5
    • 1). Dull the existing surface of the counter with the sander. Clean off the dust.

    • 2). Measure each dimension of the counter that will have laminate on it (usually, one large top piece and two or three narrow front edge pieces). Add 1 inch to the dimensions all around, then mark them out on the laminate sheets, using your level and pencil. Cut out the marked laminate with your router.

    • 3). Lay the sheets face-down on the floor. Spread contact cement over the backs of them, coating them completely. Coat each surface of the counter in the same manner. Let the cement begin to set, 10 to 15 minutes.

    • 4). Hold one of the front-edge pieces of laminate in front of the section where it will go, with an inch overhanging all around. Once it is positioned correctly, press it to the surface and hold it there until the contact cement grips.

    • 5). Press over the laminate with your laminate roller. Run the router around the edge of it to cut off the overhanging portions.

    • 6). Repeat the process for each section of laminate around the edges.

    • 7). Set dowel rods on their sides over the top of the counter, front to back, about a foot apart, and lay the large top piece of laminate over them. The dowel rods will prevent the laminate from touching the surface until you can get it properly positioned. Slide the rods out from the front once it's right, pressing the piece down to make contact with the surface. Roll over it with your laminate roller. Use the router to trim off the excess laminate around the edges.
