• Engineered or simulated stones are man-made to resemble natural stone, but needs no sealant. It is non-porous, easy to clean, and like granite comes in a variety of colors. Solid surface

• Solid surface countertops are strong man-made plastics. Cuts and scratches easily sand out. The surfaces are sanitary in that they are non-porous so germs and bacteria cannot penetrate it. Solid surface countertops can be shaped into any form and designed to look like granite. Solid surface countertops can withstand heat. • Laminates do not look like natural or engineered stone, but are easy-clean, colorful plastics. Laminates come in a variety of patterns and textures. They are somewhat stain resistant, but liquids should be mopped up promptly. Over time, water can seep into the seams. Laminates are inexpensive, but like engineered stone, cutting boards and trivets must be used to avoid scratching and burning it.
