How to Make a Sliding Glass Door Slide Better

26
    • 1). Remove any dirt or debris from your sliding glass door track. Dirt and debris tracked in from outside can get caught in the track and cause your door not to slide properly. Use your vacuum's wand attachment or a shop vac to clear out all of the debris.

    • 2). Straighten any warping and tighten any loose screws in your sliding glass door track. Over time the frame and metal track around your sliding glass door can warp from age and water damage. Tighten the screws that hold the metal assembly to the frame and correct any warping.

    • 3). Adjust the wheels that your sliding glass door rides on. Sliding glass doors are equipped with wheel adjustment screws. You will be able to spot the two screw holes or plugs on your door. They will be close together and on either the left side, right side or facing of the door that slides, depending on your manufacturer's design. Remove any plugs that you find. Use a screwdriver to turn the adjuster until you feel the door lift. Replace the plugs after verifying your door slides easier.

    • 4). Replace the wheels if your door does not slide easier after cleaning and straightening the track and adjusting the wheels. The wheels could have been damaged by extreme changes in temperature or wear over time. New wheels are available through your sliding glass door manufacturer. You will have to remove the sliding glass door from the track (which allows you to see how the wheels come off) and remove the worn wheels and put on the new ones.
