Steps to Install Plumbing Work
- 1). Locate the shut-off valve for the water. Sinks, toilets and water heaters will have their own separate shut-off valves located nearby. If you working on a section of plumbing without its own shut-off valve, you'll need to locate the main shut-off outside your home and stop all water while you are working.
- 2). Place all tools close at hand so you do not have to stop your work. You'll need pipe wrenches of various sizes, plastic gloves to protect your hands, plumber's putty, a soldering iron and a small saw in addition to the various pipe and pipe fittings the task may require.
- 3). Remove the old toilet, faucet, sink or fixture that may be in the way of the new plumbing that will be installed. Cut away a small piece of the existing drain line with pipe cutters to create an even edge.
- 4). Stuff a cloth into the soil pipe to prevent sewer gas from filling the room when installing toilets.
- 5). Place a new PVC fitting over the existing drain line.
- 6). Cut a length of PVC pipe to size using the small saw and then attach this piping to the next fitting you already placed.
- 7). Put the next fixture into place, attaching the trap of the sink or toilet to the new drain line.
- 8). Tighten all nuts and bolts around the trap to secure the piping into position.
- 9). Cut into the hot and cold water lines using the mini saw, making enough room to insert tee fittings.
- 10
Solder the tee fittings into place. - 11
Place copper wall anchors on the water pipes to secure them to the wall if these are not already present. - 12
Attach one end of flexible supply lines to the faucet and one to the tee fittings you installed so the water will run to your new fixture. - 13
Spread plumber's putty underneath faucets and around the bottom of toilets to create a tight seal against the sink, wall or floor. - 14
Turn the water back on and test your plumbing.
