The Life of a Panda Can Be Yours

1
Two giant pandas have recently arrived in Australia for their ten year vacation at Adelaide Zoo.
They are called Wang Wang and Funi.
Pandas are one of my favourite animals, so I'm looking forward to being able to wander down and visit them.
When I reflect on the life of a panda, it occurs to me that there is quite a bit we can learn from them -- things that can make our lives a bit less stressful.
If there's one thing you may know about pandas, it's probably that they like to sleep.
On average a panda sleeps ten hours a day.
I think this serves as a reminder to us all to do what we can to get our eight hours of sleep each night.
Not getting enough sleep has been associated with problems of memory, judgement and attention as well as weight gain and the onset of Type 2 diabetes.
If you want a better night's sleep, try following the same relaxing routine each night (preferably without the TV on).
Try listening to relaxing music, have a warm glass of milk or herbal tea, have a bath or do some relaxation exercises.
When pandas aren't sleeping, they wander slowly through the forest, taking regular rests.
Pandas will take the time to smell the roses and go at a pace that allows them to appreciate their surroundings.
So people, here we learn that it's always worth while taking a moment to pause and see what is going on around you.
Try to cut down on multi-tasking, and focus on the here and now.
Don't let stress build up -- find time each day to rest and recharge.
Pandas are solitary creatures.
They like to keep to themselves and each panda has its own territory.
Some people may prefer being alone more than others.
However, taking time out just for you offers a chance for reflection and relaxation.
It can be an opportunity to get stuck into your favourite pastime, do some meditation or just have quiet time.
Incidentally, when pandas do come into contact with one another they rarely fight.
If they are not mating (which is a once a year event), they may play with other pandas for a while then move on.
So, try to resolve your conflicts quickly and make more time for play.
Even reflecting on the panda's diet got me thinking.
They eat bamboo of course.
However, what is worth noting is that they always eat the most nutritious parts of the bamboo.
They don't eat something for the sake of it, which has zero nutritional content.
If we are to be like the panda, we will select what we eat with care: making nutritional choices and selecting food that is in season.
Finally, you may or may not be aware that debate continues as to whether the panda belongs to the bear family, the raccoon family or is in a family of its own.
Quite likely, the panda is unique and should be celebrated for this: as should you be.
