How to Insulate a Pier & a Beam

5
    • 1). Remove all objects from the crawl space under the floor that may impede installing the insulation. Put on a long-sleeved work shirt and a dust mask to help prevent inhaling any insulation fibers.

    • 2). Measure the length of each section of floor cavity between the joists. Unroll the insulation and cut all sections to the right lengths using work scissors or a utility knife.

    • 3). Enter the crawl space and, starting at one end of the first cavity, push the insulation up between the floor joists with the paper retarder facing up to the floor. Push a wire support up under the insulation so it is installed perpendicular to the joists. As the wire support is slightly longer than the width of the cavity, the support will bend up against the insulation, and its pointed ends will dig into the sides of the joists.

    • 4). Move along the entire length of the cavity pushing the insulation up between the joists. Install the wire supports every 2 feet. Move to all remaining cavities, installing the insulation by following the same process.
